What to know about Cruising with Autism aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Disney Cruise Line

Cruising with Autism
Royal Caribbean – Wonder of the Seas

Families traveling with Autistic family members and friends can encounter scenarios and environments that are not common in their everyday lives. And these can be incredibly stressful for individuals that thrive on the known and the routine. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Disney Cruise Line both offer opportunities for groups cruising with Autism to cruise safely and securely, eliminating stress and worry. Well, to a certain extent! Let’s talk about what each cruise line can do for those guests cruising with Autism!

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Cruising with Autism

Royal Caribbean offers an autism friendly initiative for families living with autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities. This includes sensory friendly films and toys, dietary menu options, and overall autism friendly training for Adventure Ocean staff and more.

Autism Friendly Features

families living with autism
Cruising with Autism - Coco Cay Family Cabana

Royal Caribbean provides priority check-in, boarding and departure for families with Autism, and special dietary accommodations when necessary. These are brilliant accommodations for families with autism, as waiting is oftentimes one of the most difficult tasks for Autistic individuals.

Children ages 3-11 years old can receive flexible grouping by ability and exception to the toilet-training policy in Adventure Ocean. Pagers and/or phones may be available for parents while autistic children are in the care of the Adventure Ocean Club.

Autism friendly films
Cruising with Autism pexels-photo-7991506.jpeg

Autism Friendly Films are movie theater experiences presented in a low-lit and low volume environment. Guests are encouraged to freely talk and walk around during the film. In order for a sailing to qualify for an autism friendly film, there must be at least five autistic children onboard. They are also offered on all autism group cruises.

Autism Friendly toy lending
Cruising with Autism - Autism Friendly Toy Lending

Available on all ships as part of the Adventure Ocean Youth Program, Autism Friendly Toy Lending is a newer program. You may request the program, and Royal Caribbean will provide a tote bag of Autism friendly toys that are appropriate for your child.

autism friendly activities
Cruising with Autism - Youth Activities

Royal Caribbean offers activities for children with all abilities. Families are encouraged to communicate their child’s needs and abilities to the well-trained staff so that the staff can make the appropriate modifications to make sure the children are all able to be included! So great!

Autism Social Story

A social story is a useful tool for a lot of children. It is a written or visual guide that describes various social interactions, situations, behaviors, skills, or concepts. These social stories can be useful to help prepare autistic children for what’s to come. You can visit Royal Caribbean’s Cruising Social Story here:

Royal Caribbean Social Story
autism offerings for teens and adults

In addition to everything above, Royal Caribbean also offers Teen and Adult programs. Unlike the children’s programs, though, the adult and teen programs do not provide supervision or one on one attention.

Disney Cruise Line

Cruising With Autism Disney Cruise Line

Much like Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line also offers accommodations for Autistic guests. First off, check-in. You can actually complete the online check-in at least 72 hours prior to sailing. When you do this, you can choose your terminal arrival time. This will cut down on your wait time for security screening. You can also identify your needs for the Cast Members and they will provide assistance.

disney cruise line social story

Disney Cruise Line’s Social Story comes in a downloadable 30-page activity booklet. This booklet is great for all kids, and highlights the arrival/boarding process, muster drill, as well as fun activities for kids. You can access this booklet here:

Disney Cruise Line
theaters, movies, and restaurants

Some restaurants and shows have audio/visual experiences, like strobe lights and fog, for example, that may be frightening. You can contact Disney Cruise Line Special Services at least 60 days in advance of sailing to discuss seating options.

In addition, Cast Members will be available beginning 30 minutes before shows at the Walt Disney Theater. You may request to hold seats if someone in your party cannot wait and must arrive as close to show time as possible. Seats in the back of the theater are usually recommended for guests that may need to come and go during the performance.

Finally, the Buena Vista Theater offers Family Movie Fun Time, which is an opportunity to enjoy a family feature film in a relaxed environment. Unlike a traditional movie theater experience, some lights will be left on, the volume will be turned down, and audience members are welcome to talk, leave their seats, walk around, and have fun.

characters, water slides, and debarkation
Disney Cruise Line Characters
Mickey and Minnie enjoying Alaska

Disney Cruise Line provides the opportunity for just one person to wait in line for characters if there is a member of your family with a disability that impacts their ability to wait in line. Single parents or guardians are also given the opportunity to speak to Character Greeters for assistance. For guests who want to ride the Aquaduck/Aquadunk/Mickey Slide/Twist n Spout, etc, but cannot wait in lines, it is advised to arrive just prior to opening or near closing. Unfortunately there are no alternate entrances for these experiences.

Your family can choose Express Walk Off, Mid-Point Debarkation, or Delayed Debarkation. These options are available to decrease the stress of the debarkation process. You may contact Disney Cruise Line Special Services at (407) 566-3602 or via email at specialservices@disneycruise.com.

youth activities – disney cruise line

Unlike Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line is unable to provide one-on-one counselor care, a counselor with specialty training, or counselor-assisted medical attention. There is also no exception for older children without the capacity for toilet training. Children who attend the Kids Clubs must be toilet trained and able to participate within counselor-to-child ratio groups.

Guests with Cognitive Disabilities are encouraged to attend Open House programs to take part in Kids Club activities.

So there you have it! Cruising with Autism! Cruising is a great way to see the world and it’s so wonderful to see travel companies embracing opportunities to include all families. Have you gone cruising? Let’s hear your experiences in the comments!

How does RoyalUp work?
  • You will have the opportunity to browse through various stateroom options with associated minimum bids.
  • You select the dollar amount they are willing to pay for the upgrade. Making a bid on multiple categories will increase your chance of being upgraded — but you’ll only pay for one upgrade.
  • Your bid is priced per person and based on two guests per stateroom for the entire length of your cruse. Only the first and second guest will be charged, even if four are sailing (amazing for families with greater than double occupancy!).
  • Offers will be accepted at least 2 days before your sailing and charged to the credit card on file.
What are the benefits of RoyalUp?
  • RoyalUp gives you the opportunity to experience a higher category stateroom or Suite for less.
  • There’s nothing to lose. If your bid is not accepted, you will not be charged any additional amount and remain in the stateroom originally booked.

Disney Wish Details Released!

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 47 Second

The newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line Fleet, the Disney Wish, had it’s float out just last week, a major construction milestone, as the ship prepares for it’s Maiden Voyage on July 14. This week, Disney released more details about the new ship, and I, for one, am SO excited to sail! Let’s read about the Disney Wish Details!

Inside Out: Joyful Sweets

Disney Wish Details - Joyful Sweets

Anything Inside Out-related is a winner in my book, and this sweet shop looks amazing! This Inside Out Sweet Shop, which is designed to resemble the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind where her emotions guide her through everyday life, will feature sculpted figures of the film’s five main characters and glowing Memory Orb light fixtures. PHOTO OP!

Disney Wish Details
Inside Out: Joyful Sweets

While I would be happy and content with just the decor, because I LOVE this movie, let’s get into the Disney Wish Details! This sweet shop has 40 flavors of gelato and ice cream, with daily handcrafted gelato specials. These handcrafted specials will be available in amazing combos, like peanut butter pretzel and white chocolate raspberry. You can’t have plain ice cream, though, so there will be plenty of tasty toppings available. There will be FRESH whipped cream, fruit compotes, and syrup, in addition to traditional toppings. Sign me up and say no more!

Chocolate Memory Orbs

The shop will serve signature treats inspired by the hit Pixar film. Get your chocolate memory orbs, filled with sweet candy remembrances.

Or maybe you’d prefer a nice cupcake? There are five signature cupcakes available, one to represent each emotion. Joy, a lemon cupcake; Sadness, who is represented by a blueberry cupcake; Disgust, yummy pistachio; Anger, a delectable red velvet; and, of course, loveable Fear, a spirited bubble gum! There will also be specialty macarons and cake pops, in addition to handcrafted truffles, designer cookies, indulgent brownies, and vibrant candy offerings. I just hope they don’t have that gum commercial!

Disney Wish Details – Olaf’s Royal Picnic

Families with kids ages 3-12 may reserve this Frozen summertime picnic pre-sailing, and it does come with an additional fee. Join Olaf, Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff for a fun picnic and sing-along in Arendelle. Kids will receive an assortment of gifts, including a troll plush, picnic blanket, and a custom mandolin. That mandolin will come in handy, when they sing “Reindeer are better than people,” with Kristoff!

LOOK AT THIS SHIP!!!!

New Immersive and Interactive Entertainment Venues

The Disney Wish will change the way guests interact with cruise ships. There will be many new immersive and interactive spaces for families to play in and enjoy! The Disney Difference!

The Grand Hall

Of all the things planned for the Disney Wish, I think this is the most intriguing. Disney has designed all-new built-in special effects that will magically transform the the entrance atrium into an amazing theater with the first-EVER atrium stage! Look how amazing this is going to be!

Planned entertainment for the Grand Hall includes, via Disney Cruise Blog:

  • A royal greeting will await families as they enter the glittering Grand Hall for the first time. Every child will receive their very own wishing wand upon embarkation, which they will use to make the “First Wish” of their vacation during a special boarding celebration.
  • During the sailing, families can attend a royal gathering of magnificent proportions as Disney Princesses descend into the Grand Hall to meet and greet with guests.
  • The Grand Hall stage will conceal a host of Disney friends during “Who’s Behind the Curtain?”, a playful game show where guests answer questions to reveal the identity of hidden characters.
  • On the final night of every sailing, cruisers will return to the Grand Hall and raise their wands with Fairy Godmother to ignite a spectacular farewell show featuring favorite characters, special effects and lively performances.

I can’t wait. And I can’t get the Fairy Godmother from the Descendants out of my head right now!

luna

But wait, THERE’S MORE. This all new space will feature a two-story LED screen wall, stage and bar. Luna will be a state-of-the-art entertainment hub where families will be able to laugh, play, and compete.

Luna - Family entertainment hub
Luna

Entertainment will include:

  • Villains Game Night” is a witty game show where guests will attempt to answer Disney trivia questions amid the jeers and sneers of nefarious Disney foes, including Cruella de Vil, Gaston, Hades, Maleficent and more, who will join on screen.
  • Disney Songbook” will put guests in the spotlight as they belt out Disney songs and showcase their star talent for a live camera crew, who will project each performance onto the big screen.
  • During the live grand finale event for Disney Uncharted Adventure, an all-new interactive experience that uses guests’ mobile devices to unlock hidden adventures aboard the ship, families will team up with other cruisers to battle an infamous Disney villain.
hero zone

Hero Zone is a futuristic sports arena where physical activity will blend with imagination during action-packed challenges and game show-style competitions for families to take on together.

Families will test their strength, speed and stamina during the Incredi-Games, a high-energy game show featuring an elaborate obstacle course of over-the-top physical challenges, each inspired by the dynamic characters of Pixar’s “The Incredibles.”

  • Heroes will first test their strength by busting through a “brick” wall during Mr. Incredible’s Power Punch.
  • Jack-Jack’s Whack-A Rac will pit players against Rocky and his raccoon friends, who you might remember from “The Incredibles 2.”
  • Only the most flexible families will conquer the twists and turns of Elastigirl’s Stretch-O-Rama.
  • Family speedsters will be the front-runners of Dash’s Mad Dash Mayhem.
  • Violet’s Force Field Swing will send supers soaring across a lava field. (Remember, we are using our incredible imaginations here!)
  • The strong finish includes a cool down on Frozone’s Ice Slide, where heroes will ascend to the highest peak and slide down the icy slope to victory.

This game show-style experience will feature high-energy hosts, adrenaline-pumping music, special effects and more! And there will be plenty of balcony space for people to just sit and watch the games!

This will also be the home of Jack-Jack’s Incredible Diaper Dash! Now with more fanfare than ever before, this beloved competition will offer terrific tots the chance to compete for the coveted title of Diaper Dash Champion as they speed-crawl across a 20-foot track amid the cheers (and chuckles) of family, friends and adoring fans.

The space will also serve as a free-play gym, with basketball, soccer, and tabletop games, like ping pong, air hockey, foosball, and more!

The Wish sets sail July 14, 2022. Contact me today to book your cruise!

Transatlantic Cruise

Disney Cruise Line has some amazing itineraries available, and this 13-Night Transatlantic Cruise from Miami to Barcelona definitely fits the bill! Port of Miami

This is the most important part of cruising: don’t miss the boat. You will want to be there a day in advance AT LEAST, so find a nice hotel in Miami, and get settled in. I suggest the Four Seasons Miami. Then take in the sights, like Miami Beach, or shopping, or dine in a Cuban Cafe. Then, on the day of your cruise, you can relax while you prepare to go to Port! Sure, the cruise won’t leave until 4:00, but why risk a flight delay the day of? Just trust me, and fly in the day before!

Transatlantic Cruise Days at Sea: the Disney Magic

Disney Magic

The first 6 days of this cruise will be spent at sea, so you will have a ton of time to relax and enjoy your ship. You will be sailing on the Disney Magic, so get to know the ship! For me, I’m only here for the food, so starting with dining is important to me! Aboard the Magic, you can dine at Animator’s Palete, Lumiere’s, or Rapunzel’s Royal Table as part of Disney Cruise Line’s Rotational Dining. There is also 24-hour Room Service, Duck-In Diner, Eye Scream Treats, and much more, and this is all included in the cost of your cruise. For an extra, adult’s only treat, make reservations at Palo.

You will be able to take in Tangled: The Musical, first-run movies (when applicable), and more, plus deck parties, kids’ clubs and adult-exclusive activities, pools, Senses Spa, and so much more! Read more about the amazing Disney Magic!!

Ponta Delgada, Portugal
